Leather Tanning

Before leather can be used for making coats and other garments it must go through a process called tanning. Tanning leather consists of may steps which has a real effect on the leather you can clean. Animal hides are first treated with special chemicals so that they are not subject to the hides rotting, something that would take place if the leather isn’t tanned

Leather Curing

The leather hides are fist cured in the slaughter house. In the leather Curing process, hides are first applied with salt to preserve them.

Leather Sorting

The leather hides are sorted according to size, shape and color.

Leather Siding

The hides are cut length wise through the backbone area, making two sides.

Leather Soaking

While the curing process removes natural moisture from leather hides, the soaking process removes dirt and the salt added in the curing process

Leather Washing

At the end of the soaking process the leather is then washed by fresh water

Dry Cleaner Opposition

Testifying against the proposed ban, Mary Scalco, Charlie Smith and
Richard Ehrenreich, members of the various Drycleaning Associations,
instead focused on advances in equipment and the resulting reduction
in perc use. Representatives also shared Drycleaning & Laundry
Institute 2007 Solvents White Paper and testified about undue economic
hardship an immediate ban could create for drycleaner owners and
operators.

Committee Argues Against Perc

Representatives from several industry associations appeared separately
at a meeting of Philadelphia Air Management Contol Board Ad Hoc
Committee arguing against a perc use phase-out in co-commercial
facilities in the city, those sharing premises with other businesses.
A representative of the Halogenated Solvents Industry Alliance, Dr.
Paul Dugard, challenged many intrepretations of information regarding
perc and perc exposures.

Drycleaning & Laundry Institute Wants Modification

Drycleaning & Laundry Institute’s Jon Meijer argued for a modified
ordinance allowing drycleaners in Philadelphia’s continued use of perc
in co-commercial facilities if they could lower perc levels to below
40 ppb. The executive director of the National Cleaners Association,
Nora Nealis, stated that New York does not limit perc use in
co-commercial locations and emphasized the effectiveness of technology
available to control emissions.

Philadelphia’s Air Management Control Board will review the
information and may ultimately allow co-commercial locations to
continue to use perc without threat of a phase-out.

Sir Austin is proud to report that Austin has been named one of four cities in the U.S. to be visited by the United States Mint for the launch of a new program to educate the public about coin money. The U.S. Mint reports that the American public could save as much as $522 million a year if the entire U.S. switched from paper currency to coined money.

Greg Hernandez, Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the mint states “The main advantage for using coined money in place of paper is that coined money lasts on average 30 to 40 yrs. and in addition can be melted down at the end of its life and made into new coins making the currency 100% recyclable. Long term, the GOA (Government Accountability Office) estimates that if America made the choice to use $1 coins in place of dollar bills the U.S. could save billions of dollars over time.

The U.S. Mint also reports that even though prices are down from last year it still costs the government a little more too print pennies and nickels than the coins are actually worth. On the flip side the $1 dollar coin is actually a good investment for the U.S. Mint. $1 dollar coins cost around .20 per coin to print giving the Mint a great Return of their investment.

Austin’s Progressive Populace Recognized

In a definite compliment to Austin residents the Mint stated that Austin was chosen as one of the four cities for the pilot program because of Austin’s progressive populace. The Mint also stated that Austin area residents were open to various types of new conservation programs such as renovations in recycling and the like. Deemed the “Real Change Exchange” the program hopes to educate as many people as possible on the benefits of using the lowly circulated currency. Hernandez stated that “the Real Change Exchange has been well welcomed by Austin businesses evidenced by the fact that more than 200 Austin businesses have already signed up to participate”. There are no plans to scrap using the greenbacks just yet but if Hernandez had his way Austin would serve as a test market for the country to wean itself off of paper currency and onto the currency of the future.

The biggest and most obvious reason for using a digital photographer is because receiving your portraits on a CD is not only much more cost effective than print but it also rids you of the need to have several hundred prints made that you might not ever look at again. Not to mention the money you will save by not having to order prints. In addition to the economic benefits of hiring a digital photographer ecologically speaking the reasons against hiring a traditional photographer are just as good. It is common knowledge that the chemicals that are used in the development of pictures are highly toxic. Not only that, but so is the paper that is used to produce printed photos. In addition to both the paper and chemicals being toxic the paper is also not generally biodegradable. Another bad mark against traditional photography is that the chemicals that are used in the process are poured down the drain during photo production and depending on how much chemicals are being used that is a lot of chemicals that end up in our water stream in some form or fashion. Also large amounts of emissions escape in the production of photographic paper in the form of methylene chloride. This stuff is about as non eco-friendly as chemicals come. We are not saying that you should not get ANY prints because obviously you will want to have a few. However you can review any and all pictures before you print them with digital files so that way you can make sure that the only ones you printed are your favorites.
